how to bet on a race!

tl;dr: Tokens are for betting. Tickets are for prizes.

For the 2023 Turtle Race, there are two different kinds of currency. It’s like an arcade (Dave & Buster’s, etc.) or family entertainment center (Chuck E. Cheese, etc.) where you use tokens to play the games and earn tickets to win prizes.

  • Turtle Tokens allow you to place bets.

  • Turtle Tickets are earned from races or from the special activities. These can be exchanged for prizes at the Prize Table.

In order to place a bet, make your donation at the Token Station and then bring your Turtle Tokens to the Betting Station (you can also place your bets ahead of time using the online donation portal!)

After each race is over, winners must go to the Betting Station to collect their Turtle Tickets. Prizes are first come first serve— good luck!

(For any math/betting nerds who are curious: we are using a modified Parimutuel betting system, in which all bets are pooled together and payouts are calculated by sharing the pool among all winning bets, with payoff odds being proportional to the size of each bet.)

Our Hell's Kitchen-based urban ecology education program, Earthlings.NYC, is hosting its first ever turtle race (yes, with actual turtles!) TODAY, the Sunday of Earth Day Weekend (April 23, 2023).

We have educational and creative opportunities as well as many prizes for participants of all ages who want to wager on a turtle!  This event comes from a community collective of friends, family, and neighbors who collaborate on community service / social good initiatives. We’re hosted today at the prime produce Guild for Good, a cooperatively-governed coworking office, special events space, and community center at 424 West 54th Street.

Thank you to all our volunteers, pet turtles and turtle caretakers from all over New York City, and to all our program partners that have made today possible!

And please, if you’re active on Instagram, please please tag us: @turtleteam_nyc

Today’s Charity Causes

100% of today’s proceeds will be donated while we also raise awareness for 3 NYC-based grassroots ecology initiatives:

  • GROW Externships which supports underrepresented students and developing professionals in the environmental sciences with life-changing externships

  • Seeds to Soil which creates citizen science and ecological community projects (such as the TinyPlots initiative and Earthlings.NYC)

  • New York Turtle & Tortoise Society which promotes conservation, preservation of habitat, and the promotion of proper husbandry and captive propagation of turtles and tortoises since 1970.

Friends and activities

Our community center's own mascot, Hanunah, and locally-owned petstore Petqua's famous sulcata, George, will definitely be participating in the race, as well as rescue turtles currently under the care of our Turtle Team, Koby and Bowser. None of our native NY turtles are allowed to participate because we don't want to expose them to potential pathogens before we release them back into the wild!

We have 13 turtle participants of various species and sizes from all over NYC, from our biggest 30-50 lb sulcata tortoises to the smallest baby turtles.  We will also feature several activities including arts and crafts, a book-based library scavenger hunt, and delicious food and drink options provided by onsite partner, Cafe 424.

Want to earn some extra Turtle Tickets? You can get bonus Turtle Tickets in three ways:

  • Complete the Cybernetics Library Turtle-themed Book Scavenger Hunt

  • Complete a Turtle-themed art assignment

  • Purchase a special turtle treat from Cafe 424 (while supplies last)

today’s turtle racers

  • T1: Hanunah

I am a former NYTTS rescue, beloved mascot of the prime produce community, and a proud educational partner for Earthlings.NYC and the Turtle Team. My name (Hah-nu-nah) comes from a Seneca/ Iroquois myth about a tortoise who carries the whole world on its back. Carrying the world is hard work, so I'm always on the hunt for my next snack.

  • T2: Koby

If I'm the smallest turtle you have ever seen, it's because I was sold illegally! Sale and distribution of turtles with shell lengths under 4 inches is federally prohibited, and my shell is only 1.5 inches long! My former owner surrendered me to the Turtle Team’s rescue and adoption program. I'm a red-eared slider, which has become one of the top 100 most invasive species in the world! We are super popular pets, but too many people irresponsibly release us into the wild. I’m up for adoption if you can make the commitment of keeping a turtle!

  • T3: George

Petqua, one of our event sponsors, adopted George 22 years ago when they received a call from an unknown individual looking to donate him. His favorite hobbies are greeting people, eating, and basking for hours. George has a huge appetite and he loves leafy greens, squash, and berries George lives permanently at Petqua and freely roams the downstairs. You can visit George and pick up supplies for your own pet!

  • T4: Turtle A

Representing Cafe 424 in this Sunday's turtle race: Turtle A (A.K.A. The "Little One") is an O.G. Hollis, Queens native. Watch out! This one and its sibling are never nice.

  • T5: Turtle B

Also representing Cafe 424 in this Sunday's turtle race: Turtle B (A.K.A. The "Little Big One") is an O.G. Hollis, Queens native. Watch out! This one and its sibling are never nice.

  • T6: Tuttle

Tuttle is a Russian Tortoise. He's about 24 years old -- we're not totally sure. He has been a class pet in kindergarten classes for several years. His favorite thing is crunchy lettuce. He also likes trying out new mazes and obstacle courses built by his classmates!

  • T7: Lechuga

Lechuga was adopted almost 1 year ago. He's been loved by a classroom full of Kindergarten kids, my dog, and myself. Lechuga is a beautiful mix of loving, silly, and a dash of sass. When he's motivated for some romaine, this guy can MOVE.

  • T8: Woodside

My name is Woodside (she/her/hers). My momma says I'm part red-eared & part yellow-bellied slider, so I have yellow ears. I live with another turtle named Eddie. When I can't find Eddie, I hang out with my gal pal. She's pretty quiet but always reliable company.

  • T9: Tina Turtle

Introducing... TINA TURTLE! Tina is a free-range 26-year-old red eared slider. She is very social and she uses her ramp to come out and walk around the apartment when there are people to meet. Her favorite treat is a piece of clementine.

  • T10: Max Berglund

Max is a 22-year-old free range red-eared slider who enjoys roaming his Manhattan apartment, but also spends a portion of his exciting life in a tray filled with water and a ramp. That's NYC living, baby!

  • T11: Tank

Tank is assumed to be 2 years old-we've had him since September 2020. He's very energetic for a tortoise and loves to walk, so I let him roam around the house and when he's tired he sleeps by the shoes (it's his favorite spot aside from his enclosure). Tank is a pretty fast walker for a tortoise, so let's hope he keeps this energy for the race!

  • T12: Michaela

Friend of the Turtle Team, Michaela, is also racing! Michaela arrived at her home in Harlem over 10 years ago. Her original owners thought she was a male and named her Michael Angelo & (after the ninja turtle, of course) - now she's Michaela Angela! Michaela loves being in the sun, making new friends, and visiting the Prime Produce Guild for Good.

  • T13: Bowser

Bowser is a NYTTS rescue currently under the care of our Earthlings.NYC’s Turtle Team. He’s originally from the streets of Brooklyn… and by that we mean he was rescued from a random parking lot in Brooklyn. He is also an unknown species, with many turtle specialists guessing that he’s some kind of hybrid or unusual slider morph. He’s kind of grouchy, but he really loves to eat. He’s also up for adoption, if you can handle a turtle with a strong character.
