turtle time with the turtle team!

We’re proud to present…

the official turtle Team zine!

Learn about the first 3 years of the Turtle Team (Fall 2022 to Spring 2025). We’re changing it up for the next chapter, but this cute zine memorializes the first iteration of our program!

The Turtle Team is a group of citizen scientists (learners of all ages) that work together to rehabilitate wild native NY turtles and rehome rescued exotic turtles. We work with the NY Turtle and Tortoise Society’s Rescue and Rehabilitation Program.

We also provide support for housing rescue turtles in classrooms, offices, and other public facilities as a way to educate the public about ecology and conservation.

This is Weird Al, one of the Earthlings.NYC Turtle Team’s most beloved turtle rescues. We received him from the New York Turtle & Tortoise Society and found a perfect adoption site for him at the High School for Environmental Studies (HSES).

Yes, he’s got a lot of character! Learn more about Weird Al and our rescue program!

The Turtle Team

  • Turtle Team Care & Observations (FREE TO JOIN!)

Our Turtle Team conducts care and observation of our rehabilitation and rescue turtles in volunteer groups called “Parent Pods.” If you would like to join a pod or just drop in to help out and see the turtles, please email hanunah@earthlings.nyc

Most sessions are conducted at the Prime Produce Guildhall in Hell’s Kitchen.

  • The NYC Charity Turtle Race

Organized by the Turtle Team since 2023, the NYC Charity Turtle Race provided a fun way for New Yorkers to meet exotic pet turtles while raising awareness and funds for grassroots ecology initiatives.

  • Learn about the Turtle Team's first chapter

For our inaugural season of the Turtle Team, we over-wintered 4 native turtles (3 Diamondback Terrapins and 1 Common Snapping Turtle) and rehomed 3 rescue turtles (Red-eared sliders and yellow-bellied slider).
